A New Journey Begins

Belize, 2006. During my years as a freelance travel writer.

There was a time in my life when the world was measured in train schedules, well-worn guidebooks, and whatever waited beyond the next border.

For much of the 1990s and early 2000s, I was fortunate enough to spend years exploring the world as a freelance travel writer. I discovered that every place has its own rhythm, every culture has its own definition of craftsmanship, and every memorable journey leaves you looking at home a little differently.

What stayed with me wasn't only the architecture or the landscapes. It was the people—and the experiences I shared with them. Many had quietly dedicated themselves to doing one thing exceptionally well.

A shirtmaker in London.

A denim maker in Wales.

A family winery tucked into a hillside.

A watchmaker in Florence whose workshop had been passed from one generation to the next.

Those encounters taught me that quality has a language of its own. It doesn't need to shout. It doesn't follow trends. It simply endures.

Life has a way of moving through chapters, and this is mine.

Today, I'm setting out once again—not with a backpack slung over my shoulder, but with a notebook in hand and a curiosity that's never really faded. Wildstead Lane is my excuse to go looking again. To find remarkable makers, thoughtful products, unforgettable places, and the stories behind them, then share those discoveries with anyone who appreciates living well without the noise.

You'll find clothing here, certainly. But you'll also find conversations about travel, homes with character, good wine, enduring design, and the simple pleasure of owning fewer things that matter more.

I don't expect every recommendation to suit every reader.

I do hope that each one earns your trust.

The world has changed since I first set out with a backpack, a notebook, and a deadline to meet as a travel writer. Truth be told, so have I.

This journey will be different.

I'll still be wandering old streets, finding remarkable craftsmen, lingering over long lunches, and discovering places that don't always make the guidebooks. But this time, I'll also be looking for the objects that carry those same stories home—a sweater knitted in England, a pair of jeans sewn in Wales, a bottle of wine from a family vineyard, a watch built to outlive the man who buys it.

Wildstead Lane is where I'll share those discoveries as they happen.

Some I'll find halfway around the world.

Some I'll stumble across much closer to home.

Either way, every recommendation will have a story behind it, because I've found that the best things in life usually do.

The journey is just beginning. I hope you'll come along.
